In Act 3 Scene 1 who is really responsible for Mercutio’s death: Mercutio, who provoked the fight, Tybalt who stabbed him, or Romeo who got between them? Use specific evidence (direct quotes) from the play to back this up. How would you stage this as a director? Be specific.
In Act 3 scene 1 Romeo’s best friend got killed by Tybalt’s hand. It’s hard to say who was responsible for Mercutio's death because Tybalt was the one who provoked Tybalt to fight, but it wasn't Mercutio's fight so he shouldn't've been there at all. Everything started with Tybalt asking Mercutio and his crew about Romeo. Mercutio as leader stood up and took advantage of being naive and started being aggressive and disrespectful to Tybalt who did the same thing. When Romeo arrives Tybalt switched his attention from Mercutio to Romeo, he started verbally attacking Rome saying how he disrespected them by coming to the party. Tybalt wanted Romeo to fight him but Rome didn't have anything to do with fighting Tybalt. While that Mercutio was forcing Romeo to fight for his name and rights, Mercutio wanted Romeo to show Tybalt that he is a man. But because Romeo was secretly married to Julieta, he didn’t want to have any problems with Couplets so he avoid the fight with Tybalt. Mercutio after seeing how Tybalt flout on Romeo took advantage of fighting Tybalt. Mercutio as an skillful fighter was close to killing Tybalt but tybalt did the worst move there could possible be he stabbed Mercutio from the back, and Mercutio died. I think Mercutio killed himself, his ego was the reason of his death.
If I was directing this sean I would bring all the emotions on the stage, I would show how Tybalt was disrespectful to Rome and how aggressive he was. I would show how Mercutio was screaming at Romeo to make him fight Tybalt. The part that I would highlight the most would be when Mercutio lost the fight and he is say “ Plague on both of your families “ when he understands that it was his fault of losing the fight but he still took the advantage. I would make Romeo feel like he was the one who did it because of his love to Juliet. This scene would be very dramatic because of the emotions that every single person will feel: aggression, revenge, sandnes.
