The memory play that we are reading in class is The Glass Menagerie, this play is about a poor family from St. Louis this play is an action from the memories of the narrator, Tom Wingfield. Tom is a character in the play. He wants to be the poet who works in the warehouse to support his family mother Amanda, and sister Laura. Father of the family Mr. Wingfield, ran away years ago and, and no one has since heard anything from him. Tom is the only man in the family and the only one who can keep the family alive. “Tom enters, dressed as a merchant sailor, and strolls across to the fire escape. There he stops and lights a cigarette. He addresses the audience”, this quote from Tom addresses how depressed and tired he is of living with his mother who annoys him all the time, work that he must go to that he hates the most, the small apartment in where whall his all his family lives. But the biggest issue is that he can’t live his own life; Tom’s biggest dream is to be a poet, however, his family keeps him from creating his own career and making own choices. Laura Amanda’s daughter and Tom’s older sister. Laura has a problem with her leg that brings her to the point of wear a brace and walk with a limp. Laura is twenty-three years old and she is a really shy woman, she kicked herself out from the outside world and community. "‘I wonder,’ she said, ‘If you could be talking about that terribly shy little girl who dropped out of school after only a few days’ attendance?’
"And she said, ‘No – I remember her perfectly now. Her hands shook so that she couldn’t hit the right keys! The first time we gave a speed test, she broke down completely – was sick at the stomach and almost had to be carried into the wash room! After that morning she never showed up anymore. We phoned the house but never got any answer.’". By reading this quote we understand that Laura is very shy and remote from the community. Amanda is a mother of two kids, Laura and Tom. Laura is a single mother who gets profit from her son’s work, the only other way she can live is to marry her daughter to a wealthy man that will take care of both of them. ‘ What are we going to do, what is going to become of us, what is the future?" This quote is a question that shows how lost and unfortunate Amanda is.
