History of Haiti

Haiti's has a harsh and tragic history behind it, in general, this country is known for natural disasters, poverty, racial discord, and political instability have plagued the small country throughout its history. Haiti is the border to the east of the Dominican Republic, which covers the rest of Hispaniola, to the south and west by the Caribbean. Before the arrival of other nations to the island, the population that lived there was known as Carib Indians inhabited the island of Hispaniola. Estimate range of the community was from 60,000 - 600,000. Disease and brutal labour practices nearly annihilated the Indian population within 50 years of Columbus’s arrival. In 1697 the western side of the island was given to the French. French did good for the island, by planting and working with agriculture around the west side. Haiti, whose population almost entirely decide form the African slaves, won the independence from France 1804, making it the second country in the Americas, after the US to free itself from the colonial rule, however, economic, political, and social difficulties, as well as a number of natural disasters, have beset Haiti with chronic poverty and other serious problems.

Rafael Trujillo used to be a dictator of the Dominican Republic for decades. He was born October 24th, 1981 in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic. Became the president in 1930, official see on that post till 1938.

Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo build a 224-mile border dividing the island between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Tensions between the two countries stemmed back to a 19th-century war. The borderline was only on the papers, so the people were still crossing the border to get to school and back home on the other side. That ended on Oct.2, 1937 when the Dominican military under the control of their dictator started the violation moves that required them to execute Haiti's families.

Voodoo is a religion that originates in Africa. In the Americas and the Caribbean, it is thought to be a combination of various African, Catholic and Native American traditions. It is practised around the world, but there is no accurate count of how many people are Voodooists. To understand Voodoo you have to see the world, people who believe in Voodoo believe that there are two sides of the world visible and invisible, and both of the planets are intertwined. What people of Voodoo think it is that death is a transition to the hidden world, so our predecessors are still with us in spirit and that they watch us and inspire us.

Francisco Duvalier was also was known as Papa Doc born on April 14th, 1907. Duvalier graduated in 1934  from the University of Haiti School of Medicine, where he served as a hospital staff physician until 1943, when he became prominently active in the U.S.-sponsored antiyaws campaign.

In  1959, only two years after becoming president Papa Doc created a personal police force of dictator that would report only to him. This marked the birth of one of the most brutal paramilitary organizations in the world during that time and was justified by the leader’s profound paranoia towards the threat posed by the regular armed forces. They murdered hundreds of Duvalier's opponents, sometimes publicly hanging the corpses as warnings.

Jean-Claude Duvalier aka " Baby Doc " was the son of the ex-president of Haiti François “Papa Doc” Duvalier. He ruled from 1871-1986, the end of his career happened when he was forced to flee. He was the president if Haiti longer than his father supported by the Western governments.
