In class writing " Questions "

  • What does the curtain symbolize and what is its deeper meaning? Why does Danticat want to show the readers by describing the certain? How is it dividing the woman and her child?

A big part in Night Women one of the stories in Krik Krak is the curtain that separates mother and son. The purpose of this symbolic declaration is the protection that it provides for her son's reality. She doesn't want her son to discover what she does for leaving and wants him to be innocent and protected from her life. They live in a small apartment/room and the only way to separate their private space is by spreading the curtain.  In order to prevent her son from seeing her actions, she puts the curtains in between the beds, that separates two sides. It's a struggle for her to keep all of that form. him, however, she has to provide her son with education and comfort. She surrounded by hate, aggression, and work that she hates the most. She knows that it’s a struggle, but she has to do it for her son and for herself to provide a stable living hood for both of them. She surrounded by hate, aggression, and work that she hates the most.  The curtain is an invisible boundary between reality and the world where she tries to keep her son. She thinks that he is too young to know the truth and live knowing that people are talking behind his back and that his mother sleeps with men for money. Perhaps we can compare the curtain to the shield that repels all of the negativity from him.

  • Why does the author put epilogue at the end of the stories? How does it explain about the author herself?

The epilogue is the most important part of the book mainly because in that part of the book she describes her relationship to all the stories written by her. She explains how hard it was to go against her mother in order to pursue her dream as a writer. She faces hate, anger, and fear, however, she manages to maintain confidence in her decisions and creates something like Krik Krak that tells us stories about different lives their struggles and resolutions. By providing us with the background of her life we can really see where all the stories came from and how she created them. Epilogue as a certain way to deliver the full capacity of her hard work and talent, she wants the world to know her people, culture, and the environment that she grew up in. She lets us know that it wasn't all easy for her, she had to fight for what she desired and nothing could stop her from achieving her dream.
