Night Women " Character "
A young single mother who is 25 years old and who works as a prostitute. The book doesn't provide us with her name acids from“ Woman Narrator “. She hates her job but needs it to support her son. She makes up lies about angels to protect him and wants to believe them herself. She convinces herself that women who work during the day lack her independence. She lives in Haiti, the story provides us only with a brief description of her husband but nothing else. Her husband is not a part of the family, but there is no specific evidence whether he left or died.
The scene of the story goes by at a hot tropical night in her room/apartment that is divided in two by curtains. A tiny one-room house, with only a curtain separating his “bedroom” from her place of business. The reason women narrator uses curtains is to protect her son from seeing her mother's actions towards the man.
She surrounded by hate, aggression, and work that she hates the most. She knows that it’s a struggle, but she has to do it for her son and for herself to provide a stable living hood for both of them. It was a very tough time for people in Haiti, and common man were the ones who worked, and women were working in the house and with kids.
She has sex with strangers to provide for their living, at high risk to herself and her body. She tries her hardest to hide the truth of her nighttime activities from her son, in an attempt to preserve his innocence. All of these actions are acts of love, and belief that her son will turn up to be an educated and healthy man.
It was a scary and challenging time for citizens of Haiti, the government were abbreviating all possible jobs for the community, and so the only way for a single mother to keep her family stable was to be a night or a day women.
The woman’s love for her son fuel all of her actions, what defines the story and the reason for what she does to maintain the stability. She gets into sexual contact with the man to provide for their living, at significant risk of her health and reputation.
In my opinion, this character is the strongest one of all that were listed in the past, her love and the ego doesn't let her give up on herself or her son, she fights for him and for their independence. This character from my point of view is the most hardworking and unbreakable.
