In class writing " Questions "

What does the curtain symbolize and what is its deeper meaning? Why does Danticat want to show the readers by describing the certain? How is it dividing the woman and her child?       A big part in Night Women one of the stories in Krik Krak is the curtain that separates mother and son. The purpose of this symbolic declaration is the protection that it provides for her son's reality. She doesn't want her son to discover what she does for leaving and wants him to be innocent and protected from her life. They live in a small apartment/room and the only way to separate their private space is by spreading the curtain.   In order to prevent her son from seeing her actions, she puts the curtains in between the beds, that separates two sides. It's a struggle for her to keep all of that form. him , however, she has to provide her son with education and comfort.  She surrounded by hate, aggression, and work that she hates the most....

4 thinking/discussion questions

Who in your opinion is the strongest/most developed character in the story? Which Character couldn't fight with his/her difficulties and gave up?  Which characters and stories are related to each other, or have the same themes?  Who? Which ones?  What would be the word of your choice to describe Krik Krak?   Why are there more female characters then mail characters? Why Danticat wrote all those stories? What is the main theme of this book?

"Epilogue"

In the last part of the book " Epilogue ", the story/conversation comes from the narrator whose name is not provided, however, in my opinion, the narrator of this story is Danticat the author of the book. Danticat provides a story from her life, in order to show the obstacles that were put in her way before she became the person who she is right now. The narrator is a daughter who describes the comparison between her writing and hair braiding. Story provides. us with mothers point of view that declares the negative side of writing.  Her mother point of view mainly focuses on why writing is not the best way to live and maintain a career in the environment where they live at the moment. A big portion of the  "Epilogue" explains the reason and the reason for that are the consequences in form of a conflict with the government and then prison that might follow her in future. Narrators mother wants her to become a nurse. The narrators' argument aga...

Misunderstanding- between mother and older daughter Caroline. Mother does not approve her choice in terms of getting married and to who she is getting married. Her mother thinks that she can do much better, and get a  husband who can provide for the family and maintain stability. Caroline stops caring about her mother's opinion towards the end of the story, however, she was still affected by her mothers' comments. Their mother wants both sisters to wear the same dress, whether as, Caroline and Grace are grown-ups and they make their own decisions.

"Caroline's Wedding"

The story that includes many characters and their struggle throughout the Story. "Caroline's Wedding" contains 3 main characters; the narrator Grace, older sister Caroline, and their mother Hermine. Blog post 3 Compering "Night Women to New York Day Women"

Night Women and New York Day Women are two different stories, that come from two different narrators with different life experience who live in a different society and culture. Both narrators describe a specific moment in their life, however, both in different ways. Night Women describes her own struggle and the way she sees it's in her own way, while  the narrator in New York Day Women tell us a story of how she followed her mother arouned New York and watched her for distance in order to maintain the confidence that her mother will be safe on her own in the city.   Night women is a story based on a hard working woman who does everything to protect her son and compensate their lost by doing something that she is ashamed of. The family live on the island known as Haiti. The government does not provide people with a lot of work options especially women, and as far as we know she doesn't have a proper man in her lif...

New York Day Women

New York Day Women is a great story that describes the transition/transformation of one woman from one culture and country to another. In this story, the narrator Suzzete is a daughter of the main character and the reason this story is funny and entertaining. Suzzete describes a one day story of her mother where she had to follow her all along in order to make sure she was safe and confident in her decisions. Her mother arrived in New York from Haiti, however, her daughter Suzzete lived and worked there much longer. This story creates a different point of view in which the author tells us a story in which immigrant from Haiti actually becomes successful and her dream follows along. However, the transition for her mother was kinda difficult because of the different social norms, culture, and background that she came from. When her mother arrived to the city she was confused and lost, people structure and the buildings were new and weird for her to see. Suzzete provides us ...

Diane Ackerman "feedback"

From reading the first two poems we can define the specificity and creativity of writing that the writer Diane Ackerman provides us with. Her style of writing is very different from the rest writers and poets that I had rad a learned before. Diane Ackerman uses multiple metaphors that expense the perspective of her thinking and our understanding, for example:  "  As our metal eyes wake to absolute night ", " With our scurrying minds " metaphors like those really get us to think and observe the poem what makes it more entertaining.  Her lyrics transform into a bigger meaning throughout the story or a poem, creating a background opinion and shared experience. The seed " main idea " opens up throughout the poem. By reading her writing I could define the creative writing and joy that she gets from writing poems and short stories.   What was motivating you to create your writing ?

"Seeing Things Simply" notes

The main Character is a Princess, who lives a life that doesn't reflect on her in any negative way. Her job requires her to get naked and pose for Catherin, however, for a while Princess feels uncomfortable but when the time comes she unbraces her fear. The only fear towards this job is that someone finds one of the paintings of her. During a couple of the sessions, they do not work they mainly just sit and talk to each other about a variety of things that surrounded them. Catherin leaves her house for a while in order to sell some of her work and visit the grave of her mentor, during that time Princess is just enjoying everything that surrounds her. Night Women " Character "

A young single mother who is 25 years old and who works as a prostitute. The book doesn't provide us with her name acids from“ Woman Narrator “. She hates her job but needs it to support her son. She makes up lies about angels to protect him and wants to believe them herself. She convinces herself that women who work during the day lack her independence. She lives in Haiti, the story provides us only with a brief description of her husband but nothing else. Her husband is not a part of the family, but there is no specific evidence whether he left or died.  The scene of the story goes by at a hot tropical night in her room/apartment that is divided in two by curtains. A tiny one-room house, with only a curtain separating his “bedroom” from her place of business. The reason women narrator uses curtains is to protect her son from seeing her mother's actions towards the man.    She surrounded by hate, aggression, and work that she hates the most. She knows that it...

One Theme two stories .....

"Night Women" and " Wall of Fires " in my opinion are similar because both of the stories have close meaning to each other. Both of the stories talk about women and their struggle throughout the story, also the judgmental opinions and hate that they receive from their community. But the theme that connects two stories is the judgment and misunderstanding that follows both women throughout the story. For example In " Wall of Fire " the main character mother was put in prison for fake accusations and fear that was coming for the community. People couldn't understand her specificity of having different abilities and thought that she can not live around them, what definitely played a big role on her mentality and on governments opinion that were obligated to capture her and put her in prison. In addition to that, a pretty similar story called " Night Women " which also introduces us to a mother who is being judged and misunderstood by others of b...

Discussion Question:

Discussion Question: Why did mother mention place that called " Vill Rose " in the story ? There are nights that she belives that the ghosts women are with her, so that she doeson't feel lonley.

Notes for all the stories.

A short story, “Night Women” a story of a single mother, she's a twenty-five-year-old Haitian prostitute, provides a first-person character of a night in her life as a night woman, and her son who doesn’t know how they live and with what sacrifice his mother brings food to the table. Most of the story is based on observations from the mother-narrator. The woman’s love for her son fuels most of her actions, what defines the story and the reason for what she does to survive. She gets into sexual contact with the man to provide for their living, at great risk of her mentality and physicality. She does everything to hide the truth from her son, in the attempt to preserve his innocence. However, this character stand out from the rest stories, this women committed to her son and loving him, her son reminds her of the motherhood and the commitment that was addressed in front of her to provide the best possible life for her child. All of these actions are acts of love. Nineteen Thirty-...
